Let’s Get Creative in 2021
This is arguably the most recognizable building in our community. The Fox Theater. It was built in 1939 as a movie theater in the center of our downtown on Main Street. It is an architectural one-of-a-kind, and the interior is fabulous.
It lost its splendor in the late 1990’s, and there was serious talk of tearing it down. A non profit, Friends of the Fox was formed, and I ended up its first Board Treasurer.
Lots of creative talk was bantered around on how in the world we could save it, and restore it back to its original state. We invited experienced fund-raisers to give advise. And then something amazing happened.
Following the outlandish suggestion of a passionate board member, a request was made of the Hollywood land owners to *gift* the building to the Foundation. They did. A $500,000 gift.
From then on, a few million dollars were raised, and the entire building inside and out, is now a restored historical beauty.
It reminded me as I walked past it today that nothing is outside the asking. In my life, I say, “It never hurts to ask.” So even in a dismal year, we can find a way to do great things for our community. That’s my hope as I wake up each day. There is always something good to do.
